NEW PARTNERSHIP

Global Giving:

The GVI Charitable Trust are proud to have become a project sponsor with GlobalGiving. This US based online donor forum will allow us to hugely aid our partners around the world. GlobalGiving's online marketplace allows donors to find and fund grassroots projects that appeal to their specific interests and will shortly be featuring more of our projects. Since its inception in 2001, GlobalGiving has made over $5million in donations. For more information, check out GlobalGiving.

NEW PROJECTS

Fundraisers Latin America:

Since the last newsletter there have been numerous fundraisers out there competing in all sort of events from marathons to car boot sales to photography sales. A huge thank you go to all of you who have aided with fundraising, with a special thank you to all the school children, guides, scouts and club members who have helped.

As we move into the next year of the GVI Charitable Trust we are hoping to expand our program of scholarships to be able to fund wages for teachers and free schools for the indigenous children of Guatemala, Honduras, Peru and Ecuador.

As mentioned in previous newsletters, we are well on the way to offering free secondary schooling in Urcusiqui and intend this model to be rolled out accross the other three countries. With your help we can help these children have a childhood and the education they deserve and need. Even a small donation can change a child's life forever.

Mesoamerican Carnivores:

The Mesoamerican Carnivore Project is working with GVI's partner Wildtracks, in an initiative that forms part of three important components of Belize's future plans for conservation management; the National Biological Corridors Program, National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the National Protected Areas Policy and System Plan. Part of this initiative will be the study of carnivores in the Fireburn Nature Reserve with the assistance of the local community and surrounding areas.

Camera trapping

The first three years of this initiative will concentrate on two different projects; the first will study the use of the Northeastern Belize Biological Corridor by jaguar and puma and one of their main prey species, the white-lipped peccary. The second project will involve a study on the ecology and interactions of three smaller cat species, the ocelot, the margay and the jaguarundi in order to determine what ecological factors play a role in their co-existence, and how this might affect their long-term survival.

RECENT SUCCESSES

Harambee Mkwiro:

The spirit of cooperation has always been strong in this village, where local people's have traditionally run the orphanage and pull together in times of need.

In previous newsletters you saw how with your help we have transformed the orphanage to a home for the boys from the poorly inadequate facilites that used to be there.

We are also staffing the pharmacy, which is stocked by DANIDA.

Now with the help of Timberland UK, the village will be presented with a boat and engine that will help provide an income to pay for the pharmacy and also act as an emergency boat.
